Vittee Zee

Fighting the hurricane force winds during the storm of November 12th, 1940, the Dutch salvage tug, Vittee Zee, was ultimately overwhelmed and forced against the rocks at Overton Mere.

All its crew were rescued by the lifeboat, Station Officer H. Dodd and P.C. Mabbet gaining bravery awards from the Netherlands Government for their endeavours.

The crew of the Vittee Zee took refuge in the Ship Inn, Port Eynon, immediately following their recue and awarded the pub the ship’s wheel in thanks for their warm welcome. The Vittee Zee’s wheel can still be seen within the establishment to this day whilst further relics of the Dutch shipwreck can still be found along Overton Mere in the form of large steel plates.
